Job Description

Role: Senior Software Engineer (Enterprise Integration & Data Exchange)

Location: Hybrid, Cottage Grove, MN area

Compensation: $63-$71/hour W2

Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire

Preference: Local candidates who can regularly collaborate onsite with business and technical teams

Position Summary

We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale a new enterprise data exchange capability for a large, enterprise organization. This role will play a critical part in designing and developing the APIs, integration services, and reusable patterns that enable secure, scalable data sharing between internal systems and external business partners.

This is more than a traditional development role. You'll join a newly forming team responsible for establishing foundational integration standards, architecture patterns, and best practices that will influence future enterprise integration initiatives. The initial focus is Azure-based integration development, but success in this role requires strong integration fundamentals and the ability to adapt as technologies and platform strategies evolve.

The ideal candidate combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with solution-oriented thinking, strong stakeholder communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in an environment where new patterns and standards are still being defined.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support Azure-hosted APIs, integration services, and data exchange capabilities.
  • Create scalable, reusable integration patterns that can support multiple business partners and use cases rather than one-off solutions.
  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and enterprise integration services using modern cloud-native development approaches.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate integration patterns, including APIs, messaging, event-driven architectures, and batch data movement solutions.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, architects, data teams, and integration partners to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Partner with existing integration teams to understand the current enterprise integration landscape and identify opportunities for modernization.
  • Contribute to integration standards, governance practices, and architectural guidelines for future enterprise initiatives.
  • Help establish development tooling, deployment processes, and operational practices supporting Azure integration development.
  • Participate in CI/CD, DevOps, testing, and deployment activities to ensure reliable and maintainable solutions.
  • Support ongoing evolution of integration platforms and technologies while maintaining a focus on sound engineering principles.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong experience designing and developing enterprise integrations and APIs.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure integration development, including Azure Functions and other Azure-native services.
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs in enterprise environments.
  • Strong understanding of integration architecture, API design principles, and distributed system integration patterns.
  • Experience with Azure messaging and eventing technologies such as Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, or similar solutions.
  • Experience integrating enterprise applications across internal and external systems.
  • Proficiency with Visual Studio and/or VS Code development environments.
  • Experience with Python scripting.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and cloud application deployment.
  • Experience working in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and drive solutions with limited oversight.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MuleSoft, Boomi, or other enterprise integration platforms.
  • Experience building API gateways and reusable service layers.
  • Exposure to event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, Azure Event Hubs, or Service Bus.
  • Experience integrating CRM, sales, marketing, finance, or customer-facing platforms.
  • Experience with Snowflake, Fivetran, or other ETL/data movement technologies.
  • Experience helping define engineering standards, governance models, or reusable integration frameworks.
  • Familiarity with multiple integration approaches, including APIs, messaging, ETL, replication, and batch processing patterns.

Technical Environment

Primary Technologies

  • Microsoft Azure
  • Azure Functions
  • Azure Service Bus
  • Azure Event Hubs
  • Azure Storage
  • Azure API Management
  • REST APIs
  • API Gateway Patterns
  • Python
  • Visual Studio / VS Code
  • CI/CD Pipelines
  • DevOps Practices

Adjacent Technologies

  • MuleSoft
  • Boomi or other iPaaS platforms
  • Kafka
  • ActiveMQ
  • Snowflake
  • Fivetran
  • Enterprise CRM and business platforms

Methodologies

  • Cloud-native development
  • API-first architecture
  • Event-driven design
  • Enterprise integration patterns
  • Agile delivery practices

What Success Looks Like

The most successful person in this role will:

  • Build high-quality integration solutions that are scalable, reusable, and maintainable.
  • Demonstrate strong API and integration architecture expertise rather than focusing on a single platform or tool.
  • Partner confidently with business stakeholders and technical teams to define and deliver solutions.
  • Ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, and help guide technical decisions.
  • Operate effectively in an environment where standards and processes are still evolving.
  • Balance hands-on development work with broader architectural and solution-oriented thinking.
  • Adapt quickly to changing technologies, priorities, and integration strategies.
  • Take ownership of outcomes and make progress without requiring significant day-to-day direction.
  • Contribute ideas that help shape enterprise integration standards and future-state architecture.

Why Join This Opportunity

  • Help build a brand-new enterprise data exchange capability from the ground up.
  • Influence the architecture, standards, and integration patterns that will support future business initiatives.
  • Work on meaningful projects involving internal and external system integrations across multiple business domains.
  • Gain exposure to modern Azure integration technologies and cloud-native development practices.
  • Collaborate with architecture, engineering, data, and business stakeholders across the organization.
  • Join a team where your technical expertise will have visible impact and long-term influence.
  • Enjoy the opportunity to solve complex integration challenges while helping an enterprise modernize its technology landscape.
  • This opportunity is ideal for a senior integration engineer who enjoys creating new capabilities, designing scalable solutions, and helping define the future of enterprise integration in a growing cloud-first environment.
