Role: IT Environment Engineer Location: Remote Duration: ASAP - 9/30/2027 Rate: $47-$59/hour W2, dependent on skills and qualifications
Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced IT Environment Engineer to support the stability, availability, visibility, and optimization of a complex enterprise environment landscape. This is a highly technical role focused primarily on supporting interconnected non-production environments used for development, testing, staging, disaster recovery, and production readiness.
The IT Environment Engineer will work across application, infrastructure, DevOps, database, and architecture teams to troubleshoot environment issues, improve CI/CD processes, maintain environment consistency, and reduce conflicts impacting internal project teams.
A key initial deliverable will be gathering requirements and developing an environment-management dashboard that provides greater visibility into application hosting, dependencies, security classifications, environment status, and potential scheduling or technical conflicts.
Required Qualifications- At least five years of hands-on experience supporting complex enterprise application or infrastructure environments.
- Strong experience supporting or working with CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with AWS cloud environments.
- Experience with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data platform or data lake environment.
- Experience with GitHub and source-control or deployment workflows.
- Experience using the Atlassian suite, such as Jira and Confluence.
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes and containerized application environments.
- Experience supporting Java-based applications.
- Understanding of relational database platforms, including one or more of the following:
- Oracle
- Microsoft SQL Server
- PostgreSQL
- Strong understanding of how applications, databases, infrastructure, cloud services, storage, integrations, and deployment pipelines interact.
- Experience troubleshooting technical issues across multiple systems and support teams.
- Ability to communicate effectively with application, infrastructure, DevOps, database, security, and architecture professionals.
- Experience gathering technical requirements and translating them into dashboards, documentation, reporting, or operational improvements.
- Ability to work independently, organize ambiguous information, and drive issues through resolution.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with Dynatrace or a similar application-performance monitoring platform.
- Experience with ServiceNow.
- Experience building operational, infrastructure, application-health, or environment-management dashboards.
- Experience supporting multiple interconnected non-production environments.
- Experience with environment automation or Infrastructure as Code.
- Familiarity with environment refreshes, cloning, data masking, and configuration management.
- Experience working within an IT service management or shared-services organization.
Key ResponsibilitiesEnvironment Support and Management- Support the configuration, maintenance, stability, and availability of development, testing, staging, disaster recovery, and other non-production environments.
- Maintain consistency across environments throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Support environment refreshes, cloning, configuration changes, data preparation, and access requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation of environment inventory, topology, application hosting, integrations, dependencies, configurations, and security classifications.
- Help restore unavailable or degraded environments within expected service timeframes.
- Support multiple interconnected environments containing business-critical applications and shared technical dependencies.
Monitoring and Troubleshooting- Troubleshoot complex environment issues involving applications, servers, cloud infrastructure, integrations, databases, storage, and network dependencies.
- Use Dynatrace or similar monitoring tools to assess environment health, availability, performance, and capacity.
- Coordinate issue resolution across application support, infrastructure, DevOps, database, and architecture teams.
- Identify root causes, technical dependencies, and potential downstream impacts when environment issues occur.
- Provide back-end technical support to internal development, testing, and project teams.
CI/CD and Deployment Readiness- Partner closely with DevOps teams to support and improve CI/CD pipelines.
- Validate environment readiness for deployments, testing activities, patches, and configuration updates.
- Help identify and resolve environment-related deployment failures.
- Support automation of environment provisioning, configuration, validation, and monitoring.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve the reliability of environment-management processes.
- Support Infrastructure-as-Code practices where applicable.
Dashboard Development and Environment Visibility- Gather requirements from technical and business stakeholders for an environment-management dashboard.
- Build and maintain dashboard reporting that provides visibility into:
- Applications hosted within each environment
- Environment status and availability
- Application and infrastructure dependencies
- Security levels and access classifications
- Current issues, changes, or activities affecting the environment
- Potential conflicts impacting testing, deployments, or project teams
- Establish foundational reporting that can later support environment availability, utilization, reliability, and service-performance metrics.
- Use environment data to identify optimization opportunities and reduce conflicts across internal teams.
Governance, Security, and Documentation- Ensure environments follow established security, compliance, audit, configuration-management, and change-management standards.
- Support access controls and environment permission management.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and environment-support procedures.
- Partner with security and architecture teams to ensure environment configurations align with enterprise standards.
Ideal Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate is a technically strong environment engineer who understands the relationships between cloud infrastructure, applications, databases, storage, integrations, and CI/CD pipelines.
This person should be comfortable investigating complex issues, coordinating across multiple technical teams, and creating visibility where environment information is currently fragmented. They should be able to ask detailed technical questions, identify dependencies and risks, and help improve the reliability and usability of shared environments.
This is not primarily a release-management, project-management, or environment-scheduling position. The role is focused on technical environment support, troubleshooting, monitoring, dashboard development, documentation, and optimization.
